Where did the eTrex solar go?

On a partly cloudy afternoon, we clipped the eTrex Solar to the top of a backpack and headed onto the wooded trails of Redstone Quarry in Conway, NH. Thick with oaks and maples, we still had reasonably good exposure to the sky with most of the leaves fallen. The first unit activity we noticed was the constantly-changing solar intensity reading.

The base battery life is good for 200 hours in GPS-only mode, or 100 with GNSS and multi-band tracking activated. That’s more than enough for most backpackers on extended trips. So the question arises: do we really need solar charging for an additional $100 compared to the basic eTrex SE model? For us, the answer is yes.
